Rishikesh is a city in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganges River. The river is considered holy, and the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Temples and ashrams (centers for spiritual studies) line the eastern bank around Swarg Ashram, a traffic-free, alcohol-free and vegetarian enclave upstream from Rishikesh town. Rishikesh is commonly referred to as the ‘yoga capital of the world‘ and rightly so. The destination is abuzz with visitors, who come here to learn yoga and meditation. Uttarakhand is not only the Land of Gods but also the Land of Rivers and mountains. Tehri was a small town situated on the confluence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangna Rivers in Uttarakhand. This town got submerged in the water to create a large catchment area and this way the town of Old Tehri became The Tehri Lake, Asia’s largest man made lake. The town of Tehri was evacuated to make space for the Tehri dam, and the population has been shifted to the town of New Tehri.

It is known for the popular Tehri Dam, a hydro-electric project centered near Tehri Town. The dam is located on the Bhagirathi river and is said to be the fifth-highest in the world. The nearby Tehri Lake is said to be one of the largest man-made lakes in Asia. Today, the lake is best known for adventure tourism.
