The land of Varanasi (Kashi) has been the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus for ages. Hindus believe that one who is graced to die on the land of Varanasi would attain salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and re-birth. Abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati, the origins of Varanasi are yet unknown. Prayagraj is believed to be the most important pilgrimage centre for Hindus. Traditionally river confluences are regarded as auspicious places, but in Sangam, the significance of the confluence is most pious because here, the holy Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati meet to become one. The famous epics, Ramayan and ShriRamcharitmanas exhibit the splendour of Ayodhya. An episode of Ramayan, a page of ancient history and a cluster of tourist attractions, this town has been a major centre for pilgrims, historians, archaeologists and students alike. Known as the ‘Place of Many Wonders’, Chitrakoot nestles in the northern Vindhya range of mountains and has enchanting places to visit. Chitrakoot mountain range includes Kamad Giri, Hanuman Dhara, Janki Kund, Lakshman pahari, and Devangana which are famous religious mountains. Chitrakoot is one of the important places connected to the epic Ramayana, where Lord Rama is persuaded by his brother Bharata to return to Ayodhya and where Rama performed the last rites of his father Dasharatha in presence of all the gods and goddesses.
